The English Department offers its students an opportunity to participate in a new summer course on Shakespeare in Verona, Italy. Hosted by the Skenè Research Centre, Verona, this exciting initiative will approach Shakespeare from a double perspective that integrates source studies and performance studies. Upon successful completion of the course (including a test and a final paper), participants will earn two academic credit points. More details here. For information, contact the Department secretary.
The English Department offers annual scholarships, awards and prizes at all levels of study. The list of prestigious awards includes two Theodore Harris prizes, the Teitelbaum prize, the Dickens prize, the Gisela Gross and Edward Gross prize and a new prize for Poetry (Creative Writing).
For details, contact the English Department office or Department Chair. For a full list of scholarships and prizes visit this page.
The English Department film club is run jointly by students and members of staff. Films are screened in the multimedia room of the Humanities library, and are preceded by a brief introductory talk (no spoilers). Not all films are adaptations of a literary classic, but some literary connection, or degree of literary interest is to be expected.
The theme for 2025-26 is Musicals.
